Maintenance kept to a minimum
Choosing a plant material suitable for its surrounding climate is very important in creating an energy efficient garden. With the right plants on the right garden site the maintenance needs are minimal, with the goal of plants managing on their own as much as possible once established.
Using native plant species or plants from similar climates creates not only function and beauty, but why not celebrate the local flora and gardening culture? In a suitable design setting and with a bit of extra (grey water) irrigation to prolong the growing season and shorten the dryness of dormancy, native plants can really show off the richness of local variety. This kind of nature-inspired landscaping also offers ecological niches for plant and animal life to develop in dense cities. The result is a richer biodiversity and a cost effective greenery that give measurable benefits back to society.
