Architect Hans Rosenlund of CEC Design has evaluated the AREE project in Aqaba, Jordan. The test results show:
- Energy efficient architecture and landscaping combined can save up to 75% of net energy demand.
- Residents of Aqaba, Jordan spend 30% of their normal income on air conditioning.
- A sustainable house project like AREE can be fully paid for within 3.5 years, including investment for sustainable landscaping.
- A green roof irrigated with grey water insulates even more efficiently than a normal insulated roof. The green roof creates a more even indoor temperature less sensitive to outdoor temperature fluctuations. This results in a reduced need for air conditioning.
A green roof can also become a very appreciated garden oasis for the residents. The roof garden in Aqaba is frequently used for family dinners, to have coffee with friends or for a moment of relaxation in the evening, experiencing the cool breeze from the red sea after a hot summers day.

The red line shows the lower ceiling temperatures under the green roof, compared to normal walls and air temperature.
